Just for Today – December 12 – Fear of Change

“By working the steps, we come to accept a Higher Power’s will…. We lose our fear of the unknown. We are set free.”
Basic Text, page 16

Change is an inevitable part of life, yet it often fills us with fear. We dread the unknown, worrying that the changes ahead will bring discomfort or pain. In recovery, we learn to view change differently. With the guidance of our Higher Power and the support of the program, we come to see that change often leads to growth, renewal, and unexpected blessings.

The Fear of Change

Fear of change is deeply ingrained. Many of us resist it because it feels safer to cling to what we know, even when it no longer serves us.

Common Reactions to Change:

  1. Clinging to Familiarity: Holding on to old habits, routines, or relationships, even when they hinder our growth.
  2. Anticipating Pain: Assuming that change will be negative, leading to unnecessary anxiety.
  3. Doubting Ourselves: Questioning our ability to adapt or thrive in new circumstances.

While these reactions are natural, they can block us from experiencing the opportunities that change often brings.

Looking Back on Positive Changes

Recovery itself is a profound change, and for most of us, it’s been life’s greatest gift. At first, we may have feared the idea of living without drugs. Yet as we surrendered and embraced recovery, we discovered a richer, more fulfilling life than we ever imagined.

Other changes in life often follow this same pattern. What initially feels daunting may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Losing a job may lead to a more rewarding career. The end of a toxic relationship may make room for healthier connections.

When we look back, we see that change has often been for the best, even when we couldn’t see it at the time.

Trusting a Higher Power

The key to overcoming fear of change is faith. By surrendering to our Higher Power, we acknowledge that we don’t have to navigate life’s uncertainties alone.

How Faith Helps with Change:

  • Replaces Fear with Trust: Believing that our Higher Power has our best interests at heart.
  • Provides Comfort: Knowing that we are guided and cared for, no matter what lies ahead.
  • Encourages Growth: Trusting that each change is an opportunity to learn and become stronger.

The more we practice surrender, the easier it becomes to face life’s transitions with courage and grace.

Embracing Change in Recovery

Change is a constant in recovery. As we grow, we outgrow old situations, habits, and even relationships. Embracing these changes allows us to step into a fuller, more authentic life.

Steps to Embrace Change:

  1. Acknowledge Your Fear: Admit when you’re feeling afraid of change—it’s a normal response.
  2. Lean on Your Higher Power: Pray for guidance and trust in the direction you’re being led.
  3. Seek Support: Share your fears with your sponsor or trusted friends in recovery.
  4. Take One Step at a Time: Focus on the present moment rather than overwhelming yourself with the unknown.

By approaching change with faith and an open heart, we transform fear into freedom.
